On Tuesday, musician Tory Lanez received a 10-year prison term for the 2020 shooting death of fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion.
In December 2022, Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of three felonies connected to the shooting that left his fellow musician’s foot damaged.
The 30-year-old Canadian rapper’s 13-year prison term had been requested by the prosecution. A residential drug treatment program and probation were requested by Lanez’s defense team in order to help the musician deal with his alcoholism, which they claim he developed as a coping mechanism for childhood trauma.
Since his conviction in December, Lanez has been housed in the county jail.
Megan Thee Stallion revealed in court testimony on Monday that the incident had devastated her. She stated in a written statement read aloud in court, “I have not enjoyed a single day of tranquility since the defendant mercilessly shot me.
“I’m recovering and returning slowly but surely. I will, however, never be the same.
After court on Monday, Lanez’s attorney, Jose Baez, told reporters that the rapper maintains his innocence and that his jail will be bad for the charitable organizations and people he supports financially. Baez had demanded that Lanez receive a year-long residential treatment program to address his alcoholism.
When Lanez’s mother passed away when he was 11 years old, his father, Sonstar Peterson, made a heartfelt message. “I don’t believe anyone ever moves on from it. Peterson remarked that his music eventually became his outlet.
Within minutes of the verdict being announced, the word “10 year” began to trend on Twitter as the news of the sentence spread. It puts an end to a lengthy, contentious saga that primarily took place on social media, in Lanez’s songs, and on hip-hop blogs.
There are still some internet users who believe Lanez was treated unfairly by the legal system and who are supporting him by using the hashtag #FreeToryLanez.
Tuesday marked the first time Lanez spoke in court. According to Meghann Cuniff, a reporter who was present in the courtroom, he claimed that he still has feelings for Megan Thee Stallion and that the two of them became close after their mothers passed away and used alcohol to dull their anguish together.
